Deadfencers are members of an unnamed species of shapeshifting , mischievous, but good natured fae creatures that have existed at least as long as martial arts, sports, and other athletic games. While not exactly undead, they fit the definition that humans would ascribe to one. Functionally immortal, they don't perish so much as temporarily “switch off” while their body restores itself. In the event they are rendered “dead” they will awaken after a a brief period and reassemble themselves should there be any detached parts. They live in the backrooms of martial arts gyms and sports facilities and learn technique by observing the humans whose spaces they dwell in.

These particular deadfencers have attached themselves to the local HEMA community. Their appearance can be misleading, as they are not actually wearing any fencing gear. As shapeshifters, their bodies change shape to match the athletes they mimic. They primarily compete in the underrepresented species events where they fence against other non-humans.
